20 Amazing Reasons to be Grateful Today

By: Kristen Clark

Life on earth is a far cry from perfect and it can feel overwhelmingly negative at times. In my own life, I’m tempted to focus on the things that go wrong more than the things that go right. I find myself zeroing in on the negative stuff until my sight turns into tunnel vision.

I can’t see anything good anymore because I’m so zoomed in on the bad.

Ever done that?

Honestly, it’s a terrible way to live. It’s nothing but depressing!

There’s no joy in tunnel vision, yet we all do it regularly. Since this is supposed to be the month for giving thanks I thought it would be a REALLY good idea to dedicate this post to overcoming tunnel vision and instead, choosing gratitude.

As Christian girls, we have a million reasons to give thanks…and the biggest is our Salvation through Jesus. We should be the leading example of gratitude and joyfulness. Yet sadly, we’re often not; and it’s largely because we choose to focus on the wrong things.

With Thanksgiving Day around the corner, I thought it would be really good for all of us (me included) to refocus our thinking. I’m starting a gratitude list below, and I want you to add to it. Choosing gratitude is the key to becoming a joy-filled girl, regardless of what happens in life. Let’s give thanks together!

Here’s 20 Amazing Reasons to be Grateful today:

1. You woke up this morning which means God has a purpose and a plan for you today. Every new day is a gift! “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).

2. God loves you more than anyone in this world ever could. His love never fails. “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 107:1).

3. You have free access to the greatest, most life changing book ever written – the Bible (Romans 15:4).

4. God handcrafted you just the way you look, and He says you’re wonderful! (Psalm 139:13-14).

5. Regardless of how available or unavailable your earthly dad is, God promises to be the perfect Father for you (Psalm 68:5).

6. No matter how heavy your personal burdens are, God has the power to sustain you through them (Psalm 55:22).

7. God’s forgiveness is bigger than your biggest sin. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

8. This broken earth is not our home. Jesus is coming back again. Hallelujah! (1 Thess. 4:16-17)

9. Every sunrise and sunset is a gift from our Creator. “From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised” (Psalm 113:3).

10. Every majestic mountain, luscious forest, and glistening stream is a little taste of the beauty of heaven (Psalm 19).

11. That delicious piece of food you enjoyed recently…yep, that was God’s goodness to you! God made a variety of delicious foods for our enjoyment (Genesis 9:3).

12. Do you have family? Close friends? Having friendship and fellowship with others is truly a gift! (Ecc. 4:9-12).

13. I’m guessing you own some clothes? Not everyone has clothes though…especially warm clothes. You can thank God for providing you with warm clothes today (Matthew 6:28).

14. Heaven is going to be awesome! You get to spend all of forever with your Creator, Savior, and loving Father (John 14:2).

15. God sees your secret tears and He hears your silent cries. He can’t wait to wipe them away forever. “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore…” (Rev. 21:4a).

16. Life may seem confusing at times, but God sees the bigger picture. He is always 100% in control (Isaiah 41:10).

17. God gives us what we need, even when we don’t know we need it. “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand” (Proverbs 19:21).

18. Do you remember that really hard thing that happened in your life? Well, God will use those things for good “for those who love God…for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

19. Not sure what to do with your future? Well guess what? God knows what you need to do. Seek Him and trust Him and He will make your paths straight (Prov. 3:5-6).

20. Do you wish you had a super-close-best-friend? As corny as this may sound, Jesus is truly the most incredible friend you could ever have. He is the perfect friend. He will never fail you. Never abandon you. Never let you down. He is God – and He wants to have an intimate relationship with you. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you” (James 4:8a).

Just reading this list renews my heart and mind!

There is SO much to be grateful for. God is so good to us! Let’s keep this gratitude list going.

Thank you so much for this blogpost! I follow a lot of American people on social media and know tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Even though we don’t celebrate it in the Netherlands, I think there is so much we should be thankful for. One day it’s easier than the other, but there are so much beautiful things, which God created for us. And one of the most beatiful and thankful things, is that He is with us, no matter what. I think you describe 20 wonderful and very true reasons. I underlined most of the Bible verses you gave in my own Bible (and still think the English version you use in this post, is much more powerful than the lines in my Dutch Bible version). And I think that when I feel down, I will read this blogpost again and again and again. Thank you for sharing!

I hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow. God bless you!

Assuming that Sandra put down #21 (God is always with us), I’d say #22 is: We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1).

I love this post! I’m working on choosing gratitude more and more every day. 🙂 And I think another thing that could be on the list is: #23 God made this beautiful earth that we live in! The trees, the sky, the air we breathe, and the grass beneath our feet. He gave us the sun moon and stars. And I think that’s something to be thankful for. He’s given us so much beauty all around us! And given us life itself! 😀 (Genesis 1:1)

#24 I am so grateful for music and the ability to worship God freely and sing praises to Him! I love worship because it just draws you into the presence of God. ❤ Thanks for the post! There is SO much to thankful for.

Thanks for this post!! #25 I am so very thankful that God answers prayer. Even the “selfish” prayers, or the ones that seem impossible, He can and does answer them. Just think: we can talk to the very God Who made us and everything around us!

Thank you for this wonderful, eye opening post. It showed me how much we have to be thankful for! #26 That God reveals his ways through the Bible and that he grants us understanding of His Word.

I am grateful for this blog! It’s been a huge blessing in my life. And for others too! Sometimes I send the link to the blog post to my friends and they share with me that it was just what they needed to hear. So, keep it up Kirsten & Bethany! God bless you both. Wishing y’all a blessed Thanksgiving surrounded by family & friends!
    Much love,
    Jasmine

Wow, you named all the things I am most grateful for in that list! #5 really jumped out at me cause my dad went home to Jesus nearly 4 years ago now. The reminder that God is my Father who will never leave me for any amount of time was encouraging and needed. Thank you. <3
#28 This kind of echoes Oliva's comment, but is more specific. I'm SO thankful for all music, but especially Tenth Ave. And not only their music but what they have to say without music! I can truly say I would not be where and who I am today without them. In all seriousness, I'm not sure how much of my heart would still be intact without God using them SO much in my life. So I'm super thankful for them. 🙂

  • I am so grateful that God is willing to use me! I am so thankful for the joy and privilege of leading someone to Christ! Not because of me, but because of God’s goodness.

#29 I am grateful for animals (especially dogs) that God gives us for companionship. Being able to take care and love Gods wonderful creation, while they (as much as dogs can) love you back.

Something else to be grateful for, would be the way God’s Word brings so much satisfaction and wisdom. When we are hungry, we can fill ourselves with God’s Word, which is by far the best source of energy. [But He answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. ‘”(Matthew 4:4)]
