Six Verses on Purity That Every Girl Should Know

By: Bethany Baird

I recently received an email from a girl asking me to send her Bible verses on the topic of purity. The girl said she vaguely knew that the Bible promoted purity and holiness, but that she wasn’t exactly sure where to find the passages.

After I emailed her back with a list of verses I wondered if there were more girls out there like her. Girls who know that the Bible “promotes purity” but aren’t exactly sure where to find the passages in the Bible.

If you are one of those girls who wants to fight for purity, keep reading. This blog post is written for you!

Let’s be real.

Staying pure in our culture, at times, can seem nearly impossible. Simple things like getting on Pinterest, Instagram, Snapchat or Facebook can feel like a danger zone. Just walking through the grocery store checkout line can feel slightly scarring at times.

Impurity and immorality are very real things that we as Christian girls need to be equipped to fight against. Instead of keeping the verses that I emailed back to the girl private, I want to share them with you.

I want your “spiritual guns” to be loaded with ammo that I know will work.

Ammo for the fight.

The next time you are tempted to look at, think about or participate in something that you know will not honor God, I want you to pull out these verses. They will be your spiritual ammo in your fight for purity.

Six verses on purity.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10)

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word” (Psalm 119:9)

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (Philippians 4:8)

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5)

“But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desire” (Romans 13:14)

“As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:14-16)

Pick one and memorize it.

I want to encourage you to pick one of these verses and memorize it. My go to verse is Psalm 51:10. That verse is ingrained in my mind and ready to fire anytime I’m facing something that is impure.

If I’m being tempted with an impure thought, I’ll quickly recite that verse and pray that God will make it true for me. I’m amazed at how well quoting scripture in the midst of a temptation really does help. I dare you to try it the next time you are facing an impure temptation.

Write one down and tape it to your mirror.

I also decided to write down two of those verses and tape them to my bathroom mirror.

It’s the first thing I see in the morning when I brush my teeth and the last before I go to bed. Having that visual reminder is extremely helpful for me and I know it would be for you as well.

Will you join me?

Who would like to join me by:

1. Memorizing one of the verses?

2. Writing one down and sticking it on your mirror, wall, journal or somewhere that you will clearly see it?

If you want to join me in this fight for purity, comment below and let me know! I’d love to pray for you and encourage you as you make these truths a reality in your life

Thank you for posting this, Bethany! It CAN be sooooo tough sometimes keeping pure in this world (and I’m not just talking about sexual purity). Thinking unpleasant words or thoughts and all kinds of things. I will be joining you in writing some verses down and sticking them to my bedroom mirror (I’ve chosen Psalm 51:10 and Romans 13:14). 🙂 I have been encouraged by your blog posts. Keep em coming! 🙂

    • Hey Esther, I am so excited you are joining me by posting Bible verses on your mirror. What an awesome reminder those verses will be for you 🙂 Thanks for taking the time to read our blog! We love having you as a reader 🙂

    Hi Bethany,

    Great Post. I Love it.

Just to tell you that the right reference for the 4th verse is: 1 Thessalonians 4:3 and not “4:35”.

    May God bless you!

    • Hey Luiza, Thanks for pointing that out! It is actually supposed to be 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5. It was missing the dash – 🙂

Thank you Bethany for your post!

Girl Defined has been such an encouragement to me in my first semester of college. These past 2-3 weeks God has been really been placing the burden on my heart for purity. Here are three verses that have been especially precious to me as I explore what God’s definition of true purity is:

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” ~Matthew 5:8

“He who loves purity of heart, and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as a friend.” ~ Proverbs 22:11

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” ~Psalm 51:10

    • @aubreyskeele:disqus I am so glad that GirlDefined has been a blessing to you. I am always blessed by comments like yours 🙂 I love each one of those verses you shared. It’s so encouraging to know that God is on our side and because of what Jesus did on the cross victory over sin is possible.

  • Moriah Mari

I would like to memorize all of these verses! I would so appreciate your prayers for a pure heart. It is such an encouragement to be able to visit this blog and see your honesty about the battles and struggles we girls are facing. You ladies are a blessing! Will be praying for you as well – Moriah

    • Moriah, Thanks for jumping on and sharing. We are all in this battle for purity and holiness together. I love that we can encourage each other as sisters in Christ 🙂

  • Abby

Great verses! God’s Word really does help with our struggles. He gives us peace and great endurance. Thanks for posting this 🙂

  • Caitlin

Wonderful truth in these verses. I just have to say that the reward for following Jesus and accepting that He died for our sins, is well worth any temptations we face in this earthly world. God knows that and its why He has given us these verses as His guide and promises to us. Thanks for the encouragement, Bethany! I’m in the fight for purity.

  • Christina

Hey, Bethany! I’m fourteen and I just recently started keeping up with your blog. I love it. It saddens me that even though I’m only fourteen, even I have temptations and struggle to keep my focus on god, not relationships. I love the idea of writing the verses down on a mirror. Another thing I do, is set my lockscreen wallpaper with a picture of a Bible verse so that every time I get on my iPod or tablet, which is a lot haha, I am reminded of those verses. It helps me a lot! Anyway, thank you for this post, I love finding new Scripture.
    Much love and many blessings!
    {Christina}

    • Christina, you are not alone. My struggle and fight for purity was definitely taking place when I was 14 as well. God is on your side and through the power of Jesus death on the cross victory is possible. Remember that Jesus is your source of strength and power. Keep filling your mind with His truth and He will give you the power to fight off the temptation. Praying for you!

I know this is late but I’m going over the blog posts that I missed last year, I’m also 14 and I think that many girls our age hide behind the fact that they’re young to stop themselves assessing their lives, which they know is going in the wrong direction, it seems like almost all my friends have boyfriends (or painful crushes) or read a magazine about guys, or even diet to get a ‘perfect body’. So we as young teenagers should really take a stand against sexual immorality and impure thoughts. This is a good age to practice for later life. I hope we can both stand against impurity in younger girls! *virtual high five*

  • Janet

What is considered an impure thought or action?

  • Angel

Yes, please! Pray for me! I’m fighting these impure thoughts 24/7 and I’d be really glad to know that I have Godly Brethren praying for me. Thank you very much from my heart of hearts. I love y’all. ~Angel <3
