Duggar Girls, Guys and People Magazine

By: Bethany Beal

I set my groceries on the counter at the checkout line and noticed a Duggar girl on the front of PEOPLE magazine.

I was shocked!

In case you aren’t familiar with the Duggars, they are a famous conservative, Christian and homeschooling family. They are well known for their reality television series called 19 Kids and Counting.

Think about that, an ultra conservative homeschooling family with 19 kids being featured on the cover of PEOPLE magazine. That just doesn’t make any sense.

PEOPLE magazine is the source for celebrity updates and gossip. Homeschool families and PEOPLE Magazine do not jive.

Why would any reader of PEOPLE magazine care about the Duggars or their “weird” lifestyle?

I’ve done a little research and I’ve come up with some answers. I think the reason people love the Duggar family and love watching them on TV is because of their love, joy, and stability. They have what 99% of Americans do not have.

A family that genuinely loves each other and gets along. Children who honor and respect their parents. Grown kids who have chosen godly spouses. They also have extremely high moral convictions.

This is not the norm for the 21st century family.

After 10 years of Americans watching this family’s everyday life on TV, we have to admit that their way of doing things is producing some pretty good results.

I want to take you on a little journey and dig deep into the lives of the four oldest Duggar girls. They recently wrote a book called Growing Up Duggar where they reveal the why’s behind their counter-cultural lifestyle. The book also includes the sisters’ thoughts on the big topic of romantic relationships with guys. I highly recommend reading it.

Let’s jump in and see what we can learn from “America’s Favorite Family.” (All quotes taken from their book Growing Up Duggar)

1. Thoughts on life.

“We don’t have a perfect family, and we’re far from perfect ourselves, but all our lives our parents have encouraged us Duggar kids to have a daily goal of maintaining and strengthening our closest relationships. Those relationships begin with the way we feel about ourselves, accepting the way God created us and seeking His purpose for our lives.”

Those are some awesome tidbits of advice. Imagine if you made it your goal to maintain your closest relationships every single day? How different would your life be if you chose to accept the way God created you and sought His purpose for your life?

2. Thoughts on yourself.

“Have you ever been there? Standing in front of a mirror with a negative attitude about the girl you’re seeing? You’re not alone! All of us, including the Duggar girls, have had times when we compare ourselves with the way other girls dress, do their hair, how much they weigh, how they carry themselves, and how guys respond to them. But if we’re upset with that girl in the mirror, it means we’re upset with God for how He designed us or even that He doesn’t love us.”

I sure do find encouragement from the fact that I am not alone in this! Other girls (famous girls who are featured on PEOPLE magazine) struggle with comparing their image to others. I love that the Duggar girls point us to the truth. God is the one who designed us. His love for us isn’t dependent on how good we look or don’t look. He loves us just the way He made each one of us.

3. Thoughts on guys.

“So many girls look to boys and marriage to give them what only God can give: satisfaction, security, happiness, fulfillment, and lasting significance. Girls must realize that no man can ever give them these things 100% of the time. Even the best men will mess up, and if we’re relying on them to be perfect, we will become bitter and disillusioned when they don’t measure up.”

I must admit that I totally bought into that lie in the past. I’ve often thought that I would be totally satisfied in marriage, not realizing that I am a sinner marrying a sinner. Learning to have a proper view, like the Duggar girls are describing here, will help each of us have a much more successful relationship in the future.

Closing thoughts from the Duggar girls.

From our heart to yours, we can tell you that there is no greater purpose in life than knowing and having a real relationship with Jesus Christ. We pray that God will bless your life to the degree you seek to follow Him. We love you! Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger.”

Wow! I feel totally inspired and encouraged by these thoughts from the Duggar sisters. I hope you have been challenged and encouraged as well. I haven’t read their entire book, but It looks SUPER good. If you want to hear their personal stories about the topics above, I would highly encourage you to read their book. I think you would love it!

The next time you watch their reality show or read their story in People magazine, remember that the reason their family is so happy and peaceful, is because of their relationship with Jesus.

That is what sets them apart from every other person on TV and in the magazine and it’s what can set you apart as well. You don’t have to follow after the culture’s way of doing things. You can make better decisions that glorify God and actually lead to peace and satisfaction.

Make it personal…

  • Do you live each day with a purpose higher than yourself? Do you think of pleasing God during your day?
  • Have you chosen to gratefully accept the way God designed you? Do you look in the mirror and see God’s love for you?
  • Have you believed the lie that guys can bring ultimate satisfaction? Who should you ultimately rely on to bring you full satisfaction?

I read their book a while ago and it was a good read to remind girls of God’s truth rather than the lies told to us by the culture all around us. I especially liked all the quotes that you selected – they were especially good reminders about key areas in life.
