Modesty Hacks and Fashion Tips with Hello Modesty

By: Bethany Baird

Big tears streamed down my face. I just knew I was destined to a life of drabby, old-fashioned clothing. I was sixteen, and my parents and I were having another modesty conversation.

I wanted to be fashionable, but I felt like my parents were dooming me to a life of turtlenecks and bonnets.

They did their best to explain that modesty didn’t have to look old-fashioned.

They encouraged me to have fun and explore styles but not to compromise on my modesty standards.

After years of trial, error, tears, and lots of creative thinking, I’ve finally come to understand the balance of fashion and modesty my parents were pushing for. They were right! I can dress modestly while still looking totally adorable. I don’t have to choose one or the other.

Fashion and modesty truly can go hand-in-hand.

Maybe you’ve experienced a “tears streaming down your face” moment too. You want to have fun with your fashion, look trendy, but still remain modest. You feel discouraged because you can’t seem to find the balance.

I’m here to bring you some awesome news. It can be done! You can dress cute and trendy without giving up on modesty.

Today I want to bring in one of the pro’s to give us some of her tips and tricks.

I’ve decided to interview, Rebekah Baird who is the founder of the blog, Hello Modesty. Rebekah is seventeen years old and has a passion for encouraging Christian girls in the areas of fashion, beauty, and modesty. She’s created an entire blog to inspire girls in this area.

I asked a few questions and she gave some awesome answers. Here’s what she has to say:

1. How do you dress modestly while looking totally adorable in the process?

I’ve learned that it takes a lot of creativity to dress fashionably and modestly. It’s not impossible; it just takes extra work. Creativity is the name of the game! When I see a new fashion trend hit the stores, I creatively think of ways to make that trend work in a modest way.

2. What are some of your favorite modesty hacks?

I absolutely love modesty hacks! They help me maintain my fun sense of fashion while still remaining modest. A few of my favorites are:

Denim jackets over tight shirts or shirts that don’t have enough coverage.

Long shirt/dresses to add extra coverage to the rear area.

Camisoles. I wear them under everything to add coverage up top and to keep my midriff from showing.

3. Can you share with us a few of your favorite trendy pieces?

I love the neck scarf (not to be confused with a regular scarf) because it adds a really cute touch to just a plain outfit. Hairstyles make a big difference with the outfits. I personally love cute hairstyles because they add a super fun touch. I also love a fun lip color. I feel like it adds a great pop to the outfit.

4. Do you have any wisdom or advice to share?

Modesty doesn’t have to be about dressing old-fashioned; you can dress trendy in a modest and feminine way. It just takes a little extra effort. Don’t compromise your modesty standards, just get creative.

I wear camisoles under just about everything. I also like wearing leggings under shorts/skirts that are too short. Cardigans are also a great choice for covering up your rear area. Another thing i like is wearing denim jackets over sleeveless dresses/shirts. Thanks for sharing, Rebekah and Bethany!! ❤️, Tiana

I LOVE wearing tunics/long tops/short dresses over denim shorts! It means when I see a cute dress that’s too short, I can get it for over some fitted shorts!

    LOVE your advice!!!

You guys should start a fashion line!! You can make it completely modest and still really cute! (just a suggestion. it would be really hard to do that)

  • Elizabeth Grace Bolen

I absolutely love wearing short dresses over jeans with boots so you can make sure you cover yourself if your pants are a bit tight.

What style dress and jeans do you usually use?

      • Elizabeth Grace Bolen

Normally skinny or straight jeans with a short dress that gathers around your waist and falls about mid-thigh.

I was wondering if anyone has some good modesty hacks for summer. I live in Australia, right now it’s the middle of summer and it’s SUPER hot. In my house we don’t have air-con or any fans so staying cool other ways is a priority. I always have trouble finding fashionable outfits that are modest, cheap, and that I can wear in the extreme heat. Usually I throw style out the window and opt for a plain t-shirt and jeans (or shorts if I’m at home). I’m also a uni student so I try to get away with not spending money often (If I buy something new I usually spend $10 or under on a new piece of clothing). Any ideas or tips would be much appreciated. 🙂 P.S. Just a note: I don’t have a car so I get around by walking, another reason I need cool clothing.

I can definitely relate! I live in Milan (Italy) and it is super hot in summer!
      My summer hacks are:
      – no sintetic fabrics: they are super hot! I stick to cotton, linen, silk and other natural fabrics.
      – no layers: I have a lot of low cut shirts I wear with camis underneath but in summer it is just too hot to wear multiple layers. If a certain clothing item can’t be worn alone, I don’t buy it because I know I won’t use it.
      – dresses and skirts: I try to find cute cotton dresses and skirts (maxi dresses and maxi skirts are also a must). During summer I practically skip pants altogether, because I find them uncomfortable. I know it is hard to find modest dresses, but lately midi and maxi dresses are in fashion so they can be found in fast fashion stores.
I hope that this might be helpful!

Try a decent tank top, with classy sport shorts.

Great post! I usually wear skinny jeans with a long top or something. But it’s getting to the summer now so I’m excited to be wearing more cute dresses! 😉
