Two Books That Will Radically Change Your Life as a Single

By: Bethany Beal

I was young. I was in love. Life was looking pretty good.

As a naive twenty-something Christian girl, I had my entire future planned out. I would get married within the year and leave the worries of the single life behind me.

Little did I know, everything was about to change.

Less than twenty-four hours had passed and my entire life was turned upside down.

I went from a girl in a relationship to a girl out of a relationship. Totally heartbroken by my new status as a single, I needed help and I needed it quick.

Through blurry tear-filled-eyes, I scanned the books on my bookshelf. I’d collected quite the stash of books over the years and I hoped something in that stash could help me.

Learning to Long for God Alone…the subtitle caught my eye.

It was exactly what I needed.

I needed to learn to long for God alone. He was all I truly had at this point. Without hesitation, I pulled the book off of the shelf and tossed it on my bed. I felt hopeful that reading a solid Christian book would offer me guidance and direction during this difficult time.

Little did I know that reading, Idols of the Heart: Learning to Long for God Alone, as well as,  Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy, would radically change my life as a single woman.

The next few weeks totally rocked my world.

I was reading things and learning truths that stood out to me in a whole new way.

God was gently showing me my desperate need to fully find satisfaction in Him. He was showing me that I could have true satisfaction and genuine joy as a single woman. He was showing me that my happiness did not depend on my relationship status.

Long story short, those two books radically changed the course of my future.

My life, as a single woman, took on an entirely new meaning. I was no longer wishing the single years away. I was genuinely learning to live in true joy, excitement, and anticipation of all that God had for my future.

If you’re in a season (whether single, in a relationship or married etc.) and feel discontent or dissatisfied in any way, I have great news for you!

There is so much hope for your future. You do not have to live in a constant state of misery and unfulfilled longings.

God truly has the power to satisfy your soul in miraculous ways.

When we, as Christian women, learn to truly love Jesus with all of our heart, soul, mind and, strength, it changes everything. Living to honor Jesus truly becomes the driving factor for every decision that we make. Instead of living for the “greener grass” we choose to joyfully embrace the blessings God has given us in the season we are in.

If you’re sick and tired of being sad, discontent, worried, depressed and just all over unhappy, I’m challenging you to take a step of action.

Don’t let this year slip by without taking a step of action.

When I was struggling and in need of hope and direction for my future, reading these two books were my best action steps. Because they worked so well for me and offered me such incredible truth, I’m encouraging you to consider them for your own action steps.

Here’s a simple two-month plan to get you started.

Month One:

  • Order Idols of the Heart
  • Pull out your Bible, pen, highlighter and prayer journal.
  • Read 10 pages a day.
  • Complete the study guide included with each chapter.

Month Two:

  • Order Choosing Gratitude
  • Pull out your Bible, pen, highlighter and prayer journal.
  • Read 10 pages a day.
  • Complete the study guide included with each chapter.
  • Work through “30 Day Guide to Gratitude” included with the book.

I encourage you to begin taking these basic action steps today!

You don’t have to wait for anything. You can at least order the books and get a headstart on making some change in your life.

Don’t just continue living life feeling depressed or miserable in your singleness. Get serious about growing. If you take the truths in these books seriously, I am sure they will radically change your life as a single.

Will you take a step of action?

If you’re interested in taking on at least one of these action plans, comment below letting me know. I’d love to know who’s ready to get serious about living with joy and contentment as a single.

I read Idols of the Heart during your power book study and it made major changes in me for the better. I’m so thankful that God led you to lead that study and introduce us to that book. It also set me up with good habits of consciously and intentionally read solid Christian material to accompany my daily Bible reading. I ordered Choosing Gratitude yesterday after watching your Instagram story, and so took your article today as confirmation haha! In the meantime, I’m actually reading “Girl Defined” and, oh my goodness, thank you so much to you and Kristen for writing this book. It is so helpful, and so eye opening, and I feel more encouraged and empowered as a young Christian woman! Thank you!

I ordered Choosing Gratitude a month or so ago, and it helped me so much!!! I am 26 and did not expect to still be single at this point. For the first two years after college, I thought I was single because I wasn’t good enough or because I had done something wrong. However, God has been teaching me otherwise. I am excited to order Idols of the Heart and work on finding satisfaction in God alone and not in whether or not I get back together with my “special friend.”
Thank you for all you girls do to encourage! God has used your videos to help me so much this past year. Thank you!

Thanks Bethany for the awesome post! I just started reading Loving God With All Your Mind by Elisabeth George and this is also a great book during the single years. It’s really helped me to take my focus off of the sadness and disappointment I feel and to just focus on how awesome God is. I love reading though so I’ll definitely have to check out the books you mentioned once I finish this one.

God used books to totally get ahold of me and start a process (That is still on going) to change my life into the beautiful plan he has for me! When God Writes Your Love Story and When Dreams Come True by the Ludy’s are the ones he has used for me. God is so great and so faithful! I love sharing my story, and what God has and is teaching me because i want others to have the joy and fire in them that God has given me.

I am an avid reader so can’t wait to get my hands on these!

    God Bless!
